Student Spotlight: Ryan Hay, Tech Theater Whiz

Kinkaid senior Ryan Hay has made quite a name for himself in his four years at the school. He’s known for being the mind behind much of Kinkaid performing arts’ advanced stage design, sound setup, mechanics, and general pizzazz. From pouring fake blood on cast members in Carrie to operating one of the first turntable stages in Kinkaid history, Hay has done it all.

Hispanic Heritage Month brings vibrancy to Kinkaid

When you walk into Kinkaid’s Wheless Lobby this month, you’ll be greeted by two elegant, traditional quinceañera dresses, one in baby blue and the other in light pink.

This assemblage was set out as part of Viva La Raza’s Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations on campus. The month honors the cultures and contributions of Hispanic Americans and takes place from Sep. 15 to Oct. 15 each year.

Culture Fest Brings Vibrancy and Spirit to Kinkaid

Across Falcon Green, colorful booths decorated with cultural items and foods call out to passersby to "visit their country” at the annual Kinkaid Culture Fest.

This all-school celebration is a time for community members to pick a country to learn about and present. It is also a completely student-led event, as the Culture Fest Committee handles event setup, entertainment and other facets of the campus spectacle.

Lights, camera, action… homecoming!

Homecoming is a special time at any school, but this year, it was especially so at Kinkaid. 2022 marks the first time in three years that the homecoming dance was fully “back to normal,” with the game at full capacity and the dance hosted in the Doggett Gym and with all four Upper School grades in one space.

Clubs Entice Students with Sweets and Snacks at Kinkaid Club Fair

Students poured into the Ogilvie Lobby at lunch on Aug. 24, as The Kinkaid Upper School’s 56 clubs jockeyed for the attention of students using baked treats and posters.

Kinkaid Junior Develops his Dreams at Disney Dreamers Academy

Four days in Disney World. One hundred dreams. Dozens of panels.

This is the Disney Dreamers Academy. An opportunity for America’s most enterprising teens to develop their dreams across industries, the Academy is a four-day conference that fell on March 3-6 this year. Mason Thenor, ’23 was one of the 100 students selected out of a pool of several thousand for the conference.

As freshmen Tiffany Zhang and Rosie Heghinian played “Norwegian Dance” by Grieg on the piano, the audience of several dozen students and faculty looked on with rapt attention. The moment that these two members of the Busking Club had been waiting for finally came on Feb. 25.

Celebrating Halloween through Music at Kinkaid

The Halloween spirit enveloped Kinkaid’s Brown Auditorium on Oct. 24 as the orchestra and band performed in separate, spooky “Hauntcerts.”

The orchestra played Halloween-themed songs including “This Is Halloween” and “Phantom of the Opera,” while the band played theme songs from movies such as Beetlejuice and The Addams Family.

The return of a 71-year-old tradition: the Kinkaid-St. John’s game

The sound of the vuvuzela rose in harmony with the excited shouts of spectators and cheerleaders alike on the night of Oct. 29. The Kinkaid Falcon football team stood proudly on the west sideline, their opponents, the St. John’s Mavericks, adorned in white and red uniforms on the opposite side.

Olympic bronze medalist and Kinkaid alumna Raevyn Rogers visits alma mater

Raevyn Rogers, ‘14, strode down the track with her grandmother and waved to Kinkaid students as the school band played the Olympic theme song.

Raevyn, wearing a white dress and donning a bronze medal around her neck, is Kinkaid’s first Olympian.

Kinkaid Freshman commits to Texas A&M

Freshman Jack Paris is one of the youngest students at Kinkaid to commit to a college. On his fourth day of high school, Paris announced his commitment to the Texas A&M baseball team.

Recruitment for baseball is notoriously intense and to find a good offer so early in one’s high school career is rare. Paris explained a little about the process.

It’s four-and-a-half feet to national champion….” The tense voice of the commentator at the famed Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia trailed off. A long silence followed, and Jaivir Pande, a rising junior at The Kinkaid School, took his shot.

Kinkaid sophomore Jaivir Pande wins Drive, Chip, and Putt golf title at Augusta

But the journey to Augusta was not easy. Pande worked his way through three levels of intense competition, first at the subregional level, regional level, and finally a five-state competition. He distinguished himself from thousands of other young golfers as one of 80 players from ages 7-16 to play at Augusta.

The Zoom doorbell sounded as comedian James Corden, in a yellow Kinkaid Motion Picture Club t-shirt, entered the meeting room with a magnanimous “Hello!”, not skipping a beat to jokingly chide club president Henry Segal, class of ’23, on the meeting’s encryption settings that caused him a slight delay.

Two freshmen at Kinkaid part of scientific history

Two Houston teens, twins Isabelle and Alexandra King, Kinkaid ‘24, had to miss their biology test to be a part of a possibly history-making, real-life science experiment, where they were the experimental group. They took part in a clinical trial of Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine aimed at gauging the effectiveness of the vaccine in kids age 12 through 17.

Kinkaid implements affinity groups as a way to foster dialogue

Given the racial tensions that have arisen over the past year, Kinkaid has taken various measures to create an inclusive environment for all students.The English curriculum was altered and both a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion council for parents and a student-led Diversity Leadership Board were created. One of the most recent measures the school has implemented is hosting bimonthly affinity groups throughout the Upper School.
